Wonderful to again have work selected for the Spring Show at the Penwith Gallery, St Ives. Such a lovely bunch of artists and a huge array of talent.
‘Children and childlore’ (bitumen and oil on canvas, 70x60cm, 2022) is an older smaller work that celebrates the life and work of Elizabeth Stanhope Forbes, a Newlyn painter who was so often over shadowed by her husband. Nonetheless she was a key founder of Newlyn School of Artists and continued painting until the end of her life. We would know more about her but her husband burnt her letters.
Her beautiful exploration of women and children through paint is celebrated in this painting which also explores representations of women and care.
The show is now over but looking forward to a joint show with ceramicist Debbie Prosser at the gallery in early 2025 entitled ‘Telling Tales’. It will be wonderful to work with her on juxtaposing ceramic and paintings that explore ancient and new stories about women’s lives.
