On show during April at Tremenheere Gallery at Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens near Penzance, “Engage” is a new show of contemporary art works from the Newlyn Society of Artists.

When you’ve been around so long you are the goddess of many things (mixed media on canvas 200x180cm has an ironic title reflecting how history and contemporary society so often resigns women to less celebrated roles of caring and cleaning. The Egyptian Goddess Neith was worshipped for thousands of years as the creator, goddess of birth, death, war and mother of crocodiles, amongst other things yet was supplanted by patriarchal religions, such as Christianity, with more important male gods/god. They haven’t even been around as long as Neith  but we can all see what happened to women’s fortunes…

This multi-layered painting celebrates and questions the value we assign to women’s lives and pokes fun at worship. Inviting you to actively engage with art and its socio-political themes, you can enjoy this historical-contemporary tapestry-like painting as it is – or interactively add the golden apron (via the Velcro dots).
