Small paintings

framed painting of putti like children playingI use different processes and whether large or small paintings often use layers of gesso, bitumen paint and colourful oils to create paintings that explore sexual difference, narratives and selfhood.

We know and construct ourselves through the contours of the bodies that we inhabit. Exploring body specificities and residues through the medium of bitumen paint, forms and performs new relationships between contradictory selves and multiple positions.

There is a form of palimpsest in these paintings. It is a term applied to medieval manuscripts; the act of removing and replacing images and texts, one on top of another. It has become a term that contains notions of layering up meaning and history. Bitumen paint can be used to create depth and tactile surfaces on a flat plane and over time it is possible to  layer up patterns and writing underneath a final image that lend depth of field and tactility.

Studies in Survival are small (25x25cm) colourful folk art paintings that celebrate the lives of women. The paint on the  canvas has patterns like textiles and figurative gestures convey a sense of drama. They celebrate  how women and mothers around the world survive psychological, physical, and mental pressure. The repetitious texts are about the repetitive struggles that women have often invisibly endured and survived.
There are currently no longer any of these available but do contact me if you are interested in commissioning work.
